Summarize Your Source

Writing Activity

A good way to show your comprehension of what you have read it is to write a summary about the text.  When you write a summary, you want to condense the main ideas of an essay, a story, or an article into 100 words or so, using all your own words and not quoting from the text.  This sounds easy, but actually, it is challenging to condense a long article or story into 100 words.

Using your prior summarizing skills and what your learned about paraphrasing:

  • Choose one source from your research for your essay. (must be substantial length)
  • Summarize it in under 100 words. The goal is to show your comprehension of the author’s ideas.
  • Do not use quotes. No quotes. (This is paraphrase only)
  • Provide the reference citation (MLA 8)
