Chapter 10 Learning Outcomes

  1. Define sex and gender and understand the social construction of gender vs. sex as a biological concept.
  2. Discuss gender socialization, and how family, peers, schools, the mass media and religion are social agents for gendered pathways.
  3. Differentiate between the theoretical perspectives’ interpretations of gender and the roots of gender inequality.
  4. Outline the categories of sexual orientation and understand the inequalities and social movements associated with the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
  5. Understand how societal expectations of gender result in inequality at home and in the workplace and may lead to gendered violence.
  6. Review and explain the different waves of feminism, different forms of feminism, and thoughts on reducing gender inequality.
