This text was made possible by the OER Award project through Lansing Community College and is intended for students enrolled in our First Year Experience (FYE) course. This text is a remix of multiple OER and our original work. We have provided end-of-chapter attributions to indicate the specific OER from which each chapter is derived.
In the last 20 years, our typical college success books have gone from $25.00 to over $100.00. College Success not being a major area of study, the cost of buying the course books were understandably not a priority. In that time, other college expenses have also skyrocketed. Student Success Pathways at Lansing Community College developed from the desire to help our students at Lansing Community College cope with the increasing costs of college textbooks and the difficulty of finding appropriate and affordable materials. Through this project, we are giving students the opportunity for open accessibility to the textbook and a more reasonable college experience. It is our hope that text is not only a cheaper alternative, it will better address the needs of our Lansing Community College students.
Our student population is diverse in age, ethnic/cultural background, and educational background. Our FYE course provides an introduction to the college experience and to skills students need for success. Students will learn and apply strategies for adjusting to college and improving classroom performance. Topics include academic and self-management issues, such as campus resources, study techniques, communication, critical thinking and problem solving, career planning, time management, goal-setting, finances and stress-management.
It is our hope you will find these materials useful as a foundation for developing your own course materials. We want you to build and improve upon our work in order to assistant your students in reaching their academic goals and success.
