Getting Started

Benefits of Exercise

Why do I have to exercise?

Life now is very different than it was in the past. Technology and automation have lessened the amount of physical work we humans need to perform on a daily basis to survive. We push buttons and touch screens and the work is done for us. This means we are not moving our bodies enough. Most people aren’t doing things like chopping wood, handwashing clothes, farming, etc. Take a visit to Greenfield Village in Dearborn to get an idea of how different life was in the U.S. 100 plus years ago!

When we aren’t physically active, we begin to experience negative health effects. The first effect people tend to think about is becoming overweight, but there are many other health risks as well. Being physically inactive comes with a long list of negative health effects: high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, certain cancers, depression, anxiety… the list goes on.
